| "I decided to emerge from the cave of my retirement and take a look at what’s going on in the union that for 25 years was so much a part of my working life. As the markets and home values come crashing down around us, the decades of trickle-down economics have now coalesced into a torrent of debt and foreclosure. It is always the workers who are left in the wreckage of an economy whose bubble has burst. And it is always they, not the predatory lizards of Wall Street, who will put the pieces of the country back together. There must be a vision and a direction in this work and nowhere is this embodied more than within the Union. The Union must have leadership and solidarity and both must be based in real participatory democracy. That means we must elect leaders who can rise above parochial interests to move the Union to act in solidarity and lead the fight against the outsourcing of union jobs, concessions and takeaways of our hard-fought gains, and violations of workers’ rights wherever they occur. I endorse the Leadership Team in the upcoming Local 21 election to be the stewards of the Union in these critical times. I ask all my working colleagues to vote for and support these candidates for Union office:
